Inčukalns Cemetery of Honour and Monument of Kārlis Zāle

Resting place of victims of the Red Army, where you will find a unique stone monument – an image of grieving mother with bunch of roses.

Inčukalns Cemetery of Honour is a memorial place created to remember and honour victims of the Red Army who died fighting for their home and native land.

As far back as 1941, owners of a house in Sējas parish put the flag of the independent state of Latvia on a mast. Seeing this, a special unit of the Red Army shot the owners of the house. When it became know about what had happened, local residents began to form self-defence units, but the soldiers’ bullets did not have mercy on many courageous people.

Now they are resting at Inčukalns Cemetery of Honour, and their names can be read on a memorial plaque dedicated to them. The cemetery is surrounded by bushy pine forest, where you will find a monument of famous Latvian sculptor Kārlis Zāle representing a grieving mother with bunch of roses. It reminds about the sacrificed lives and the harsh way to freedom.
