Linden-tree of the Turaida' Rose

One of the most popular legends tells about the Rose of Turaida, on the the grave of whom there is a linden-tree.

The story about Turaida's Maija who sacrificed her life in the name of love has become a sort of a symbol of lovers. Motifs of the legend are used in the play “Love stronger than death” by the famous Latvian poet and playwright - J.Rainis. It is said that the secular linden-tree was planted on the grave of Maija. Over the course of time the tree has been affected by fires, and mushrooms deteriorating its timber, etc.
