Sv. Jānis Church

One of the oldest and mightiest sacred buildings in Latvia. From its tower you can observe the panorama of Cēsis.

St. Jānis Church is one of the oldest medieval architectural monuments and one of the oldest sacred buildings in Latvia.

The church was consecrated in 1284, but its tower, from which you can observe the panorama of the city of Cesis, was built in 1853.

The church has been a Livonian Order's Dome, and Order Masters, clerics and knights buried in there, thus there you can see one of the largest collections of tombstones in Latvia.

The church also has an impressive organ, which is one of the largest Latvian historical concert organs, and the altarpiece, which was dran by outstanding Estonian artist Johann Keller.

The church is decorated with colorful stained glass windows showing the Livonian Order, Vidzeme province, city of Cēsis and coats of arms of the Order of the Sword. The light passes through the stained glass of the church and creates a special mood.

The church has experienced many historic events and epochs. It was both Catholic and Lutheran parish. The church was damaged in wars and fires. It served as a horse stable during the Livonian War.

St. Jānis Church currently is a place of Lutheran worships, world-known choral and organ music concerts and music festivals. In the tower of the church you can see exhibitions.
