Experience the Magic of Latvia During the Summer Solstice!
We invite you to witness an authentic Latvian tradition – the firing of the black clay pottery kiln, led by Ilmārs Vecelis, founder of the Latgale Pottery School. The event will take place on June 21 from 14:00 to 17:00 in the heart of Gauja National Park, Līgatne Parish, at the holiday home "Mākoņi".
This is a rare opportunity to observe ancient craftsmanship and witness the moment when fire gives birth to art. Ilmārs Vecelis, one of Latvia’s most renowned ceramicists, will share his expertise and the secrets behind black clay firing. During the event, you will have the chance to purchase specially fired black clay bowls, beer mugs, large plates for Jāņi cheese, and pots – beautiful and practical pieces carrying the legacy of Latvian ceramics.
Let’s embrace the natural beauty, the power of fire, and the joy of togetherness, and immerse ourselves in ancient traditions. The Summer Solstice is the perfect time to feel the soul of Latvia in all its charm!
The event is organized by the Tourism and Arts Center "Mākoņi un Māls".

Boat Adventure – Solstice Sunrise
On June 21, the Boat Adventure – Solstice Sunrise is a special event where you can draw energy from nature at its fullest, combining all four elements.
This is a time when all four elements are present. The first is Earth, as we walk barefoot—in traditional folk costumes—to receive as much strength from the Earth as possible. The second is Fire, as we light a bonfire to invite Fire’s presence. Often, these days are quite windy, bringing the third element, Air’s energy. We sing and breathe deeply—inhale, exhale, deeply and harmoniously. And often, the fourth element, Water, is very present—rain falls, we wash in the dew. This interaction with all four elements is very precious.
That’s why we invite you to enjoy this magical moment with us by kayaking to the Gauja River mouth, together amplifying the power of these natural energies and enjoying the special solstice sunrise over the vast waters of Carnikava while seated in a comfortable and stable Roteko Solina kayak.
Organized by Boards You.
