Banuzu (Bānūžu) sacred spring

The Bānūžu sacred spring is situated near the road Bānūži – Skujene at the low meadow. It is an archaeological monument of local importance.

Supposedly, the name of the Bānūžu sacred spring was given at the time when there was a wooden hill fort by the Bānūžu lake. The 19th century’s written sources mention that near the Bānūžu hill fort, there was Jāņa mountain where a great old oak once grew where sacrifices took place in the past. Possibly, the Bānūžu hill fort, sacred spring and Jāņa mountain with the oak once formed the same ancient complex.
