Magical, beautified with Latvian traditions, folk songs and dances, overwhelmed by the scent of meadow flowers - experience unforgettable Summer Solstice in Gauja National park - the oldest and largest national park in Latvia.

Līgo is celebrated in each homestead. Especially on Midsummer's eve people reach to be closer to nature, trust rituals of happiness and beauty, enjoy festive dishes - Solistice cheese, beer brewed  and bacon buns made by the hosts.

Summer solstice market in Valmiermuiža

Mother nature gives us special treasures. On June 18 Valmiermuiža will gather local producers from all around Latvia in homemade grocary and craftsmen market "Gardu muti".

In the market degustate and pamper taste buds with homemade bread, cheese, smoked goods, homemade wine, honey and lots more! 

Items made by local craftsmen would make our ancestors proud, as they have been made according to the best traditions. Along the fair all visitors will have an opportunity to enjoy a varied culture programme, including activities to get better acquainted with the traditions of the annual customs, learn songs and games, master some of the traditional crafts. Ancient solistice traditions in Turaida Museum Reserve

Our strength is hidden in the ancient folk-songs, which express the sonorous soul of all Latvian nation. Through traditions and rituals, gain ancient and modern knowledge about meadow plants and Summer solstice floral head wreaths, feel your belonging to nature and folk traditions, as well as gain strength and energy for the whole summer and year on June 21 in Turaida Museum Reserve, Jāņa Hill.

The summer solstice is the time of year with most dedicated folk songs. At the concert, you will have a unique opportunity to hear the world's largest kokle music instrument. 

In Turaida Museum Reserve guests are welcomed to visit Folk Song Hill, that is a symbol for the Singing Revolution, sending an eternal message about the strength of song and the self-respect of the Latvian people.

Fire rituals in Ozolkalns

Every worthy mountain deserves its own Solstice bonfires. Let's light 3x9 bonfires together in Ozolklans. Let's tie 3x9 bouquets of flowers for ourselves, our loved ones, our country. Let's learn about Solstice traditions and sing together with the sounds of music instrument kokle. 

Wreaths can also be woven from the plants of Ozolkalns, if you come earlier and enjoy the magic of Saulstavja in the meadows of the mountain. 

Ozolkalns Hill opens reveals vast and beautiful landscapes and on the bank of the winding Gauja River. The campsite, which seems to be bursting with life, offers accommodation in well-furnished, heated cottages and sites for pitching a tent.

Rituals of Midsummer’s Eve in Anna Manor

Annas Manor is surrounded by the richnes of blooming Latvian nature and true hospitality lives here. Annas Manor’s forest park is designed for long walks and philosophical conversations. 

In the shortest night and longest day of the year immerse into the magic of the summer solstice and heartly participate in Annas Hotel Midsummer’s Eve celebration on June 23 - June 24.

Latvians believe that during Summer Solstice all trees and flowers are endowed with special abilities that increase beauty, strength and wisdom. Girls and ladies are invited to participate in flowers picking and crowns weaving. 

Midsummer's eve bonfire is one of the symbols. It is symbolic of light transmission to the next solar year and must be kept at the highest terrain, in order to encourage light. Boys and men are invited build the bonfire that will nicely warm everyone in Annas Manor till sunrise. 

In Latvian mytology the Sun is the giver of light and warmth and the controller of human time. On that day, the Sun, wreathed in a garland of red flowers, was said to observe the summer solstice by dancing on a silver hill while wearing silver shoes. Experience special donation to the Sun by making straw dolls. With good thoughts participants will be welcomed to  put the dolls as a decoration on the bonfire before burning the bonfire - wishes will come true.
